ChatGPT Ads in Australia: What They Mean for Your Marketing in 2026

Think about the last time you Googled something and clicked through to a website. Not just glanced at the top result. Clicked through, read the page, found what you needed. If you’re being honest, it’s happening less and less.

More people are skipping the search entirely. They’re opening ChatGPT, or Google’s AI, or Perplexity and just asking. The question goes in as a sentence. The answer comes back as a conversation. No clicking. No scrolling and assessing through ten blue search result links.

That shift has been building for a while. But in February 2026, it took a new turn: OpenAI started selling advertising inside those conversations.

ChatGPT ads have launched. Here’s what’s different about them.

You can find plenty of articles that will walk you through the specs. What ChatGPT ads look like, what they cost, which subscription tiers show them. That’s all useful, but it’s not the interesting part.

The interesting part is what kind of moment is being monetised. Someone scrolling Instagram is killing time. Someone searching Google is browsing options. But someone typing a question into ChatGPT? They’re asking for advice. They’re having a conversation with something they trust to give them a straight answer. And now, that answer comes with a sponsored recommendation sitting underneath it.

The targeting doesn’t work like Meta or Google. It’s not based on demographics or browsing history. It’s based on the conversation itself. If you’re asking about accounting software for a construction business, the ad is for accounting software. If you’re researching holiday spots in WA, the ad might be from a tourism operator. The context is the targeting. That’s new.

What the early ChatGPT ad data shows

Criteo was the first ad-tech company to join OpenAI’s advertising pilot, and they released early performance data in March 2026. Across their US client base, users who came through ChatGPT were converting at roughly 1.5 times the rate of users from other referral channels.

When you think about it, that makes sense. Someone who’s just had a detailed back-and-forth with AI about their specific problem is further along in their thinking than someone who clicked a banner ad or scrolled past a sponsored post. They’ve already done the work of narrowing down what they need.

The entry costs right now are out of reach for most businesses. We’re talking a minimum spend of around US$200,000 and a CPM of about US$60. That’s enterprise territory. But those numbers will come down as the platform opens up. They always do.

When will ChatGPT ads be available in Australia?

ChatGPT ads aren’t available here yet. OpenAI has not confirmed expansion plans. We know Google’s AI Overviews, for example, took about five months to make the jump from the US to Australia. We’re a market with a lot of early adopters so we can expect them to expand here soon.

But the bigger shift that ChatGPT ads represent? That’s already well underway here. AI Overviews now show up in roughly 39% of Australian searches. Click-through rates for top organic positions have dropped 34.5% when an AI overview is present. LinkedIn has reported losing up to 60% of its B2B search traffic to AI-powered search. These are current numbers, not forecasts.

The question isn’t whether AI is changing how your customers find you. It already has. The question is whether your business is showing up in those new places.

What Australian businesses should do now

You don’t need a ChatGPT advertising budget. But there are shifts worth making now that will put you in a stronger position no matter which platform comes next.

AI advertising and the trust problem

There’s a part of this story that isn’t getting enough airtime. Millions of people now treat ChatGPT like a trusted advisor. They ask it what to buy, who to hire, where to eat, how to fix things. The level of trust people place in those answers is something most advertising channels have never had.

Now that same tool is showing sponsored content next to its answers. OpenAI is being upfront about it. The ads are labelled. Users on paid plans don’t see them. But the dynamic has changed. The line between a recommendation and an advertisement inside AI is getting very thin, very quickly.

For businesses, that cuts both ways. There’s a real opportunity here: a new channel where people are engaged, high-intent and converting well. But there’s also a higher bar. When people are asking for honest advice, the brands that earn their attention need to be worth it. Show up with substance, or don’t bother showing up at all.

At Clout, we work with businesses across Perth and WA to build marketing that holds up when things change. We’re tracking the ChatGPT ads rollout and we’ll be sharing updates as things develop for the Australian market.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will ChatGPT ads be available in Australia?+

ChatGPT ads launched in the US on 9 February 2026 but are not yet available in Australia. OpenAI has confirmed there is no immediate global rollout, though Australia is expected to be in the next wave of markets when they do expand. Based on how similar platforms have rolled out previously, most industry projections point to late 2026, but no date has been confirmed.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?+

In the current US pilot, ChatGPT ads run at approximately US$60 CPM (cost per thousand impressions) with a minimum spend of around US$200,000. These are early-access prices aimed at enterprise advertisers. Costs are expected to come down as the platform scales and opens to more markets, including Australia.

Can small businesses advertise on ChatGPT?+

Not yet. The current minimum spend puts ChatGPT ads out of reach for most small and mid-sized businesses. However, as OpenAI expands the programme and introduces more ad partners, pricing is likely to become more accessible. In the meantime, small businesses can prepare by making sure their website content is structured for AI discovery and their online reputation is strong across reviews, case studies, and industry mentions.

How does ChatGPT ad targeting work?+

ChatGPT ads are targeted based on the conversation a user is having, not their demographics or browsing history. If someone is asking about accounting software for a trades business, they may see an ad from an accounting software provider. The ad appears at the bottom of ChatGPT’s response, clearly labelled as sponsored.

Should Australian businesses be preparing for ChatGPT ads now?+

Yes, but not by setting aside an ad budget. The most useful thing to do right now is make sure your digital presence is set up to be found by AI tools. That means clear, specific website content, strong reviews, published case studies, and a brand identity that is distinct enough for AI to recommend you over competitors.
